About the EMSOC project

The EMSOC project ended in November 2014. The website and the newsletter are therefore currently no longer updated. You are obviously welcome to visit this site and to browse through the information that we have posted during the past four years!

The goal of this project is to critically assess the belief of the user being empowered in a social media culture. The research is structured according to three main areas of interest in society where user (dis)empowerment is taking place related to social computing: inclusion, literacy and privacy. An interdisciplinary team from Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Universiteit Gent en KU Leuven collaborate to provide well-funded answers to the challenging assumptions and principles of the EMSOC research project. The IWT funded strategic basic research runs from 2010 till 2014.

We are entering a social media culture, which epitomises the mutual shaping between participative media technologies on the one hand and social communication and collaboration on the other hand. In this realm the user is the central actor, however, only to the extent that he or she is actually empowered to grasp the opportunities and face the challenges in the digital media environment.
